Idiocracy Delay? Say It Isn't So!
August 13, 2006
by David Hartwell
Of the many future releases I am highly anticipating, few match up to the hype I was feeling for Mike Judge's upcoming screwball comedy: Idiocracy. To my own disbelief and horror (and possibility to yours too if you are as big a fan of Office Space as I am) the release has been changed from September 1st to "Postponed Indefinitely," which we know could lead to some very bad news in the future.
This very brief article containing the information was found at MTV.com: Bad news for "Office Space" fans: Less than a month before its most recent release date, Mike Judge's long-awaited follow-up "Idiocracy" has been postponed indefinitely. Starring Luke Wilson, Justin Long and "Office Space" scene-stealer Stephen Root, the flick tells the story of a common man who awakes a thousand years in the future to discover that he's the most intelligent person alive. Director/writer Judge is currently without a release date for the film, and rumors of a limited theatrical run are rampant. …
I am not a studio exec and I don't have intricate knowledge into the vast behind-the-scenes dealings of major Hollywood conglomerates, but I do know what I like; and I like Mike Judge's humor. I don't know the reasons for pushing back the release date of this highly anticipated film or not releasing it all (God forbid), but if it is because the studio feels that the movie is sub-par or far less than perfect, then I say "at the very least give us a limited release."
Now, if a limited release is not already in the works. I beg 20th Century Fox (which no longer even lists the movie on their site) to at least give some information regarding this drastic move. And to the readers and fans: flock the message boards and let everyone know just how much this movie needs to come out, because it would be idiotic not to release Idiocracy.
