Flags/Sun Trailer- Wow!
August 16, 2006
by David Hartwell
As some may already be aware, a combined trailer to Clint Eastwood's two highly anticipated war epics, Flags of Our Fathers and Red Sun, Black Sand, has been released on Warner Brothers' Japanese site. And right at the start you know that something good is upon us. From the looks of things, I think that Clint Eastwood may already (though I shouldn't get too ahead of myself) be making room in his Oscar case. Both films featured in the trailer have the same overall tone, that is, it's hard to differentiate between the two films. This similarity in films will definitely help paint a broader picture of the battle at Iwo Jima when it is seen from both sides (Flags of Our Fathers shows the battle from the perspective of the six men featured in the famous picture, while Red Sun, Black Sand shows it through the eyes of the Japanese).
It will be a rare treat to get to see both films in relatively quick succession, because war films tend to have the notorious habit of being overly one-sided and reveal their own agenda clearly on the frame. But the presentation of both films is something that I, personally, will enjoy to both watch and contemplate after I have seen them.
On the imdb.com's message boards for Flags of Our Fathers, there was some worry that the film won't live up to the book from which it is based-but what movies really ever do to those who read the books? Unfortunately, I haven't read the book, but I should add it to my list along with P.D. James' The Children of Men, but I do know that Clint Eastwood, who directed movies like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby, wouldn't disappoint on a movie as important as this. Not to mention Paul Haggis taking the helm on writing both movies- teaming up with William Boyles Jr. (Jarhead, Apollo 13) for Flags of Our Fathers and Iris Yamashita for Red Sun, Black Sand. But enough with the name power, the trailer shows me enough to know that these two movies will not disappoint the fearful.
If you would like to view the trailer for your self you can find it here, just disregard the Japanese subtitles at least until a trailer is released for American audiences. Feel free to leave a comment about the trailer or the prospective movie in general.
