Happy Feet Cancels 3D IMAX Version

September 6, 2006
by Alex Billington

ComingSoon.net has reported that the 3D IMAX version of the animated musical comedy Happy Feet is being canned for only a 2D IMAX version! Happy Feet features the voices of Robin Williams, Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Brittany Murphy, and Hugo Weaving all as penguins in a comical adventure about a tap dancing penguin named Mumble. Oddly, I already remember watching a 3D trailer for the movie in front of Superman Returns 3D, and it's already gained quite a bit of interest from many pre-teen young girls who love cute, cuddly baby penguins.

Happy Feet

This is an interesting decision on Warner Brothers' part, as the article doesn't state why the decision was made to can it. You can read my own personal opening on 3D (Why The World Doesn't Need 3D), or, to paraphrase: I really don't think it is an enhancing or worthwhile medium yet. It's bland and boring, and really takes away from a movie's experience on screen. Although there is no confirmation from WB on this, it would be interesting to see if they canceled this due to the studio's internal reactions to the 3D version, budget problems, or likely competition problems with its release day the same as Casino Royale and Tenacious D, or what.

Note: there will still be an IMAX version, however it will only be in 2D.

Look forward to full 2D (and rightly better versions) of Happy Feet in theaters nationwide on November 17th!

Well, that sucks. I'd seen the 3D promo during Superman Returns and
figured that since the promo was 3D the movie would be also. So, after
buying tickets I noticed no mention of 3D. Nothing like bait and switch.
I hate getting swindled. Warner Brothers, shame on you.
