A Never-Ending Pirates Franchise?
September 18, 2006
by Alex Billington
There has been discussion amongst our staff here at FirstShowing.net and in general about what (if there is) the next franchise movie series will be. For example, the James Bond series has been going for nearly 40 years (or more) and has over 21 "sequels," if they can be called that. The point is that it has been developed into a never-ending franchise. And with all the sequels coming out recently, are we on the brink of seeing another franchise that can go on forever?
The good news is that Pirates of the Caribbean may be the next franchise, or so we're hoping. Combined with not only the success of the two films so far (being the third movie in the world to ever break $1 billion box office), but the fact that pirate stories have no ultimate end and can be continued as long as fresh ideas arrive, all contributes to this possibility.
In a recent quote from Mark Zoradi, president of the Disney Motion Pictures Group, he stated that the third film, At Worlds End, will be the last in this trilogy but will not be the last sequel.
"The third film… will conclude the initial Pirates trilogy, though it is unlikely to be the last Pirates sequel," the Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.
We'll be following this as it develops over the next few years possibly into the major franchise that many (not all) people are hoping for.
