A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints Poster Contest
October 2, 2006
by Alex Billington
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is about Dito Montiel (played by Shia LaBeouf) and his life growing up in Astoria, Queens, New York. His group of friends, Nerf, Antonio, and Giuseppe, are an eclectic mix of troublemaking youngsters with nothing to do during the hot summer days but complain about the heat. Dito meets Mike, a new kid from Scotland, and they become best friends as they make weekly trips via subway into Manhattan to make some money walking dogs. Dito's father Monty is the stern but caring father that they all love and the local group of girls, Laurie, Jenny, and Diane, help fuel the guys' sexual desires. When some Puerto Ricans from another neighborhood start vandalizing their neighborhood, Antonio, the tall, buff punk of the group that always has a black-eye and bruises, decides to stand up for them and inevitably makes some decisions that change his and Dito's lives forever.
Jump ahead 20 years. These are some of the events that the older Dito (played by Robert Downey Jr.) remembers when he comes back to visit his sick father. Dito left his home after a tragic incident from his childhood and left all these friends and memories behind, only to return 20 years later to confront them again. A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is about coming to grips with your childhood and recognizing the love that a family has. You can read our review of the movie here.
