Guillermo del Toro Talks Hellboy 2, and Maybe Hellboy 3!

October 17, 2006
by Alex Billington

Now, for those that don't know, I'm a hardcore Hellboy fan - but unfortunately I think the majority of the public didn't enjoy the first Hellboy movie (as much as I). But that doesn't mean that mastermind Guillermo del Toro can't create a fantastic sequel! And there's some more news straight from del Toro today. He talks about the latest on the film, that it will be starting production and shooting early next year, and that a third movie is possibly in the works as well!

IGN's FilmForce caught up with del Toro who discussed a number of details, including that Doug Jones will be voicing his character Abe Sapien, as didn't happen in the first film. Mike Mignola and a team are currently working on creature designs and they are budgeting shooting in London and Budapest to start in January. Universal is the studio that decided to pick up the film and give it an earnest budget of $70 million, about the same as the first film. The biggest news, however, is that there may be a Hellboy 3 in the works:

The question must be raised then: Does that mean a Hellboy 3 is in the works? Del Toro concedes that he has an idea of where he would take a third film in the series.

"I've talked to [Hellboy creator Mike] Mignola about the third one. He seemed to like [my idea], and that is that the way the love story would pay off in the third movie would be completely unexpected," hints del Toro. "I knew what I wanted to do on the first one, but I had no idea if we ever would get to do a second one. And now that we are I really am laying down the breadcrumbs that will lead you to a very, very - hopefully - powerful denouement of that loving couple."

Guillermo del Toro has said previously that the Hellboy 2 is rather a new look at the first movie than a straight sequel, something like a remake but definitely not one. This may help all those who didn't like the first movie come to actually appreciate the sequel given del Toro's capabilities.

And don't forget to watch the premiere of the Hellboy: Sword of Storms animated movie on Cartoon Network on Saturday, October 28th at 9:30PM (ET/PT)! Click here for all the details on that.
