Borat's Next Film is Bruno, Rights Won by Universal
October 30, 2006
by Alex Billington
The Hollywood Reporter states that the result of a bidding war that happened just last week has ended with Universal as the winning studio in acquiring the rights to Sacha Baron Cohen's next cinematic endeavor based off of one of his characters: Bruno. Universal will be paying $42.5 million for the worldwide rights to the movie with a $20-25 million budget. An interesting decision, given the joke is already out about Cohen and his characters and it's a guess as to who he'll be able to still fool.
The character Bruno is a gay Austrian fashion reporter for youth TV in Austria. He's already had many segments in Da Ali G show on HBO, in similar fashion to Borat, and done some quite hilarious segments. Many of Cohen's characters are incredibly original, but I think they're a bit overused, and especially at this point with the popularity of Borat, are all too well known. He needs to think of something new to take on the world, something that we don't all know about yet. In the meantime, if a gay Austrian fashion reporter comes to interview you, be wary, be very wary.
