Dreamworks Kicks Aardman After Flushed Away's Box Office Failure

November 16, 2006
by Alex Billington

Variety reported yesterday that Dreamworks has opted to end its partnership with Aardman, the animation house behind Chicken Run, Wallace and Grommit, and now Flushed Away. Although Aardman is a powerful and respected animation studio, the box office failure of Flushed Away has struck hard with Dreamworks, not even reaching close to a profit in its second week. It has only grossed around $40 million, far from the reported budget of $150 million, and is expected to only make $80 - $90 million by the end of its theatrical run.

Maybe this will teach them a lesson - stop making awful movies! Flushed Away was such a giant leap away from anything that Pixar does that I'm happy to see Dreamworks struggling for releasing it! I'm not sure who the blame goes to, obviously Dreamworks thinks its Aardman, but maybe it's the other way around, as I've honestly never been impressed with any of Dreamworks animated movies except for the Shrek franchise. They do have some interesting films coming up, like Bee Movie and Kung Fu Panda. So we'll have to see how well those can hold up as well as Shrek 3.

Flushed Away has now, according to some sites, made a profit.

I'm not saying it was a the best movie ever, but it was much better than some have claimed.

Now the DVD is for sale, but we won't be able to verify how successful it is, right? amazon currently lists it as the 12th highest ranking dvd…
