Sony Picture's Box Office Domination - $1.5 Billion in 2006

Normally we don't cover box office earnings, for a number of reasons, primarily because they shouldn't be a factor in determining your choice of movie or other movie-going considerations. And of course I can't suggest a better site for box office earnings than BoxOfficeMojo.com anyway. However, the news that comes as of today is quite amazing. Sony Pictures Entertainment, with The Pursuit of Happyness leading the box office this weekend, has broken the domestic box office record with a total of $1.573 billion in earnings domestically for 2006.
In addition to the domestic earnings, Sony released 13 films that opened at #1 on their opening weekend, as well as 13 films that had opening weekends of $20 million or more. And also worldwide they've passed the $3 billion mark in global ticket sales setting another record. All in all this is quite impressive, even for a selection of films that weren't the highest rated but did earn the most. Read on for some more staggering statistics.
Among the openings that were part of the 13 in #1 to help break the record (in order) were: Underworld: Evolution, When a Stranger Calls, The Pink Panther, Silent Hill, RV, The Da Vinci Code, Click, Talladega Nights, The Covenant, Gridiron Gang, Open Season, The Grudge 2, and The Pursuit of Happyness. In addition, Casino Royale didn't make #1, as it was beat out by Warner Brother's Happy Feet, but it was another big money-maker for Sony this year.
And some final statistics to show just how dominate Sony Pictures really is over the box office. This year is the third year in the past five years that Sony has been #1 at the domestic box office. And as this year concludes, Sony controls over 18% of all tickets sold here in the US and Canada. Pretty incredible I'd say!
Next year Sony has a massive collection of enormous films that will likely set it up to take the domestic again. However we have yet to see how everything plays out! Among some of the big ones: Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Reign Over Me, Premonition, Surf's Up, Next, 30 Days of Night, The Water Horse, and Catch and Release.
