Stephen King Serves Up His Top 10 of 2006

We're at the time of year where just about everyone, from big names to bloggers alike, will be announcing and discussing their top 10 lists for 2006. However there is one prominent name I must mention - the one-and-only Stephen King. In his column in Entertainment Weekly he posted his top 10 list for 2006 with quite an interesting selection, and it's worth bringing up. He seems to provide an interesting spin on the typical "critics' choices" and for that, I must mention him.
I'll start off by listing his top 10 movies:
10. The World's Fastest Indian
9. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
8. Waist Deep
7. Snakes on a Plane
6. The Illusionist
5. The Descent
4. Casino Royale
3. The Departed
2. United 93
1. Pan's Labyrinth
Mr. King has a brief write-up for each movie in the column, and you can read that here. He also writes some interesting commentary about the movie studios and how they're not doing things correct to draw Baby Boomers like him out to the theater. He didn't even see most of the other movies out this year because of it, and puts some of the "blame" on the fact that television has been getting more and more interesting. However that's a whole other argument for another day.
Pan's Labyrinth for the top choice of the year is amazing. I'm glad to see it getting that nod from him and (as I've said before) I believe it will win Best Foreign Film Oscar come next year. As for the rest? Also quite great. Snakes on a Plane IS a good movie for what it is. The Illusionist and The Descent are also great. Casino Royale and Departed? Fine choices as well. He seems to have it down especially for not bringing up all the endless independents or other unknowns or following the paths of everyone else.
I'm quite satisfied at his list and hope it builds some interest in what are some truly great movies from this year and hopefully to draw people back to the theaters again. The best part - Pan's Labyrinth isn't even out yet! It's going to keep building this buzz and excitement and hit the art house screens in December and January and launch itself to incredible success! Bravo Mr. King for a great list.
