CHUD's 2006 Masterpieces: All in a Week's Work
by Alex Billington
November 15, 2006
I respect a lot of the other great film websites out there, and this time I've got to give some mention to the long-time runner CHUD (aka Cinematic Happenings Under Development). Devin from CHUD, who I've met and is a great guy that I trust quite a bit, wrote an article about The Masterpieces of 2006, and I thought I'd make mention of it - it's a good read. I'm also nearly in agreement with him. Read on for more of my thoughts.
The interesting part is that he mentions the 3 masterpieces of 2006 are: The Fountain, Children of Men, and Pan's Labyrinth. What's coincidental is I've seen (and am seeing) all 3 of these in under a week's time. I saw The Fountain last Friday (as well as again this Thursday night) in Los Angeles for the press day that we recently posted clips from in our latest podcast; I saw Pan's Labyrinth at the Denver Film Festival on Monday night; and I am seeing Children of Men today, Wednesday. Unfortunately I've got to keep quiet until the official release dates before posting my reviews or any in-depth thoughts.
However, I do think it's great that we're hyping these masterpieces as much as we can. Even though they may not get nominated for Oscars, and even though they may not have stellar reviews around-the-board from critics, they deserve to be mentioned by all the great film websites out there. They deserve the hype and they deserve the recognition, because they are some of the greatest masterpieces of this year and of a long time. I can't exactly speak for Children of Men just yet (in a couple of hours), but I can speak for The Fountain and Pan's Labyrinth.
For now, there's only one thing I can tell everyone to do. And that's to make sure you go out on opening day in support of these wonderful masterpieces and see each one. They need it, they need all the word-of-mouth and buzz and box office help they can get. The Fountain opens this upcoming Wednesday, November 22. Pan's Labyrinth opens on December 29. Children of Men opens January 5, 2007 nationwide. And if you end up seeing any of them, let me know your thoughts!
