Latest Contest (March 7): 300
So, in running events in theaters here, we've handed out some 4,897 posters (both full size and minis) to people at the movie theater. Yes, you heard that number correctly, we've given out a massive 4,897 posters, around 40% of which were full size ones, the same full size ones you buy at AllPosters.com for $24.99, but double-sided. And in handing that many out, what I've started to realize is that people really don't seem to care or want the posters. Now, when a certain one comes along that people are really excited for (Pirates 2 for example), then people feed on them like pigeons and bread. So what I've decided to do is host a weekly giveaway for a few posters from our collection (even for films not yet released).
(First off, I need to preface by saying one of my favorite sites as of current is the outstanding IMPAwards.com, where you can find EVERY poster that has come out every year.)
To start off this discussion, I've got to say that posters are an integral part of a movie's marketing campaign. They're made in the look and the style of the movie, so that when you think of it, and its title, you think of the poster and the way it looks and the font it uses. In turn, the website and additional advertising is all designed off of the poster's look. You go to IMDb.com or Yahoo Movies and the image they use to reference a movie is its poster. Posters are great, there are some fantastic ones and some awful ones out there. They're really what make the image of a movie in people's minds. You see them at the theater, lined along the walls, announcing everything upcoming, and you get excited.
Posters, despite this talk of all their image and excitement, really seem to die down when you talk about them being in a home, on a wall. Are people out there just not that excited about them? Or do you just have to find the right one for the right movie? I hand them out and no one really seems to care that much for them, they just throw them aside. But then I read people's discussions online and they're excited. Every movie news site in the world posts an article about the "latest Transformers poster" that just came out because it's huge news! But is it really? If the moment someone posted "new poster!" and you had the chance to get a full size version of that poster, how much would you pay, what would you do to get one for free? Would you put it on your wall in your home and leave it up for many months to come? I feel more often than not the worst happens and posters that are actually taken home don't deserve as much highlight as they should. But I could be entirely wrong, I could just be imagining all of this!
To create some excitement and to really shine a spotlight on posters, we're going to run a weekly contest for some full size posters. All you'll need to do is check back every Wednesday for the latest posters we have to give out.
