Sequel Rumors: The Good Shepherd and Hunt for Red October / Jack Ryan
by Alex Billington
December 10, 2006

A few new rumor reports from a couple of websites on some rather interesting sequels. The first is from an upcoming interview that CHUD.com has with The Good Shepherd's screenwriter Eric Roth. Remarkably, The Good Shepherd isn't even out in theaters yet, and there is already rather interesting sequel discussion. I've seen the film already, and it is fairly good, but I don't know if it's sequel worthy.
The second rumor comes from IESB.net and an e-mail from a tipster regarding Alec Baldwin and a sequel to The Hunt for Red October, or at least another Jack Ryan film with Baldwin in the role. Read on for the details on both sequels.
The Good Shepherd
CHUD.com had a phone interview with The Good Shepherd's screenwriter Eric Roth, and he talked about how he was working on a second script in addition to the first one, as the two together are a complete "piece" on the CIA. Here's the quote that really set it all off:
"We might get our asses kicked, so it might be a nice pipe dream. When we met, [Robert De Niro] had been working on a CIA project that was set in a different time period - his was from the 70s or so until the fall of the Berlin Wall. We kind of struck a bargain that if he directed this one I would write the second one for him. They're of a piece."
As always, the box office results are the biggest say in whether a second film gets made, and although it sounds like it may be an interesting sequel, it obviously is not completely confirmed. The full article about the sequel has some spoiler details on The Good Shepherd, so read on if you want to!
The Hunt for Red October / Jack Ryan
IESB.net received an e-mail tip from a guy saying that he had seen Alec Baldwin down at Paramount, who had said that he was there about a new Jack Ryan film. Baldwin played Jack Ryan in the original The Hunt for Red October, also produced by Paramount, but didn't continue on any of the other Ryan roles (that often went to Harrison Ford) for other reasons, including working on Broadway.
Another rumor report recently from site Moviehole.net had stated that Paramount was "eager" to bring back Jack Ryan to the big screen and was working on an upcoming project that, however, was not based on any of the Tom Clancy books. This whole rumor is a bit confusing and probably getting warped far out of context and all reality, but at least it's a rumor a lot of people might be interested in hearing. Even if the most it means is that Jack Ryan will be returning in some film.
So read on further at IESB.net if you want to see the e-mail the tipster sent and more about that whole rumor.
