The Mummy 3 Director Revealed
January 9, 2007
by Alex Billington
I'm currently sitting up at the Bloghaus in the Bellagio in Las Vegas checking some things on the web after getting out of the Warner Brothers Home Entertainment press conference on the Total Hi Def disc. Unfortunately I won't be reporting on that disc, but you can read all about this incredible innovation on Engadget. However, I do have some interesting news in regards to The Mummy sequel that is in the works.
As reported from Variety, Rob Cohen (of XXX, Stealth, and The Fast and the Furious) is in talks with Universal Pictures to direct the upcoming Mummy sequel. The film is currently targetted for a 2008 release, but not too much more is known. We've actually heard Rachel Weisz express her interest in returning personally at a press event for The Fountain, but no official deals are signed with either her or Brendan Fraser for the sequel. Not that great of news, as Cohen's past track record isn't the greatest, but that is of course yet to be seen.

I get that the Mummy movies have all been action films, so from that standpoint Cohen might not be the worst pick. What does worry me is that none of his films have shown the sense of humor that made the Mummy films so fun. I'm just not sure he can keep the same feel to the franchise. If he can't, the next film WILL fail miserably.
