Independent Horror Being Pushed Forward

Although I personally felt like After Dark Films' Horrorfest was a terribly miss-marketed kick in the groin for horror fans, news is buzzing around about the possibility of Horrorfest 2 for 2007. This festival will once again be run by After Dark films and is tentatively scheduled to hit multiplexes the weekend of October 19. Unfortunately it is too early for any information on what films will be apart of series, however there is some exciting news on some other independent titles.
David Arquette had a very interesting panel at Comic-Con over his first indie horror film titled The Tripper. After accidentally loosing his clips of the film for the panel, Arquette decided to give a hilarious question and answer session with the audience. The film premiered at the Screamfest and has been waiting for a release date ever since. Fortunately, After Dark Films has picked up the distribution right and looks like The Tripper will have a limited release on June 1st.
The Tripper focuses on a group of hippies who are taking a trip to see a concert over the weekend. Unfortunately for them, they meet the demise of a Ronald Regan-obsessed serial killer. This will mark David Arquette's directing début, who managed to round up a plethora of actors for the film. The actors include: Thomas Jane, Courtney Cox, Jaime King, Paul Rubens, and Jason Mewes.
Another indie horror film that was not that well received at Comic-Con was James Isaac's Skinwalkers. The film features a twelve-year-old boy and his mother who become targets of two warring werewolf packs. The cast features Jason Behr and Rhona Mitra. No one revealed any footage or images depicting what the werewolves would look like, but Isaac described them as being "nothing like anything we have seen before." Skinwalkers is currently scheduled for release on July 4th.
The last independent horror film that has picked up a release date is Wristcutters: A Love Story. The film is set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide. The film is directed by Goran Dukic and features Patrick Fugit and Shannyn Sosssamon and is set to release in September.
For only being January, it looks like this year is going to be very interesting for independent horror films. Keep at lookout at FirstShowing.net for any other release dates on some up and coming titles!
