Polanski Taking on Pompeii

In addition to our Director Spotlight on Roman Polanski, a bit of news has come out about his next project. Polanski is set to direct a film called Pompeii, a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of Mt. Vesuvius just before and during its eruption. Apparently the film's budget will be $130 million - quite high.
The film is based on the bestseller book of the same name by novelist Robert Harris, who is also writing the script. Filming will begin in Italy this summer for a likely 2008 release.
ComingSoon.net provides a little more insight into the story:
The story's protagonist is a young engineer who has to repair an enormous aqueduct whose destruction threatens the Roman Empire. He finds himself enmeshed in politics and romance.
The film takes place over three days and the final act is the volcanic eruption and the destruction of the aqueduct, which stretched 60 miles and served hundreds of thousands of people.
With that big of a budget I'm pretty excited. I remember talking about this in elementary school, hoping one day there might be a good movie about Pompeii! And I don't think Roman Polanski would let us down.
