David Goyer Off 'The Flash', Shawn Levy On - Movie Now Doomed

We never reviewed Night at the Museum here on FirstShowing.net for a good reason. Beyond the fact that it was just a full Holiday week and the movie didn't screen in advance, it was just a terrible film, despite how much money it made at the box office. David Goyer, director of Blade: Trinity and the upcoming movie The Invisible, recently announced that he is no longer part of the adaptation of DC Comics' The Flash. Now today an announcement comes from Warner Brothers that Shawn Levy, the director of Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen, will be directing The Flash instead.

Unfortunately this is a decision that may doom the movie. Levy has said that he is going to be making a "lighter movie" than previous comic book adaptations. At this moment in the comic book movie era, strong directors are needed for big projects, or else the movies will turn out like Daredevil or Catwoman and become flops. Unfortunately that's the direction that The Flash seems to be going in, but alas, there will be quite some time before a justified opinion can be developed. For now, this is just an announcement.

I couldn't disagree more about Night at the Museum. My wife and I just saw it this past weekend, and it's a great light hearted comedy. I wish there were more hour and half good family comedies that can still appeal to adults. It doesn't try throw in plot to just move the movie along, it takes it for what it is, a popcorn flick. We couldn't have enjoyed it more.

I can't argue with personal opinion, but I felt the writing was the biggest problem in Night at the Museum, with the ridiculous twist of the plot and his son and the stone tablet - that was just pointless to include. For it to have been a better popcorn flick it should've just been a magical museum and that's it. No stealing of the tablet, no past relationship and estranged son, none of that… I personally think Night at the Museum was one of the worst films of last year… but then again everyone has their own opinion.

The Cheaper By The Dozen bit concerns me more than Night at the Museum, and least us not forget that Goyer directed Blade: Trinity. Anywho, although I'm concerned about Shawn Levy being called to the task, I have to admit, I'm kind of relieved. Don't get me wrong, I like angsty, dark superhero movies (ala Spiderman and Batman Begins) as much as the next person, but for the Flash? Especially if he's Wally West, this film needs a slightly more lighthearted direction. It would fit more with his character. May I remind you of the horrible Flash tv series that shortly plagued the early 90s with its attempt to be as dark as Batman…

Of course, now we're on the other end of the spectrum. Will Shawn Levy make a joke out of the whole project? The inner-cynic in me says probably, but I'm also inclined to give him a chance to prove himself. Often directors get themself stuck in a set of par-bar productions, and just need a good opportunity to write a movie, say, that has the potential of having an actual plot. I hope they don't follow the comic exactly to the tee, though. I like to see a little more creativity go into a filmed work (for example, I was happy when, in Spiderman, his web ability was genetic and not that lame contraption Peter Parker invented in the comics.)

I hope its not with Jay Garrick or Barry Allen, though. If it is, I'll fall asleep halfway through the movie, I'm sure. They're such traditional superheroes. Call me shallow, but BORING.
