The 15 Essential Geek Movies
February 7, 2007
by Alex Billington
This isn't a creation of our own but it is certainly worthy of being mentioned! The list of the 15 geek movies you need to see before you die comes from The Houston Chronicle writer/blogger Dwight Silverman's TechBlog. Among his choices are of course The Matrix, The Fifth Element, WarGames, and Office Space, but also such perfect choices as Brazil, Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Serenity, 12 Monkeys and a few others.
This list is so damn good I may even have to print it out and tape it up to remember the best geek movies ever made. Of course he's missing some major ones that I'll add: Sneakers, Blade Runner, Pitch Black, Space Balls, Alien, Tron, Pi, Donnie Darko, Star Wars, I could go on forever… I definitely suggest you check out this full list here. For never-ending suggestions read the comments in the entry and you'll find hundreds more great geek movies, too.

I just know that Alex put this up just for me. Just like any list, it's subjective, but here are my two nitpicks:
1.) Evil Dead II is a FAR geekier (and better) film than Army of Darkness.
2.) Where the hell is Tron? Since he has WarGames (another film I LOVE), we're not going for the best films, but absolute must-sees. Darkman and Repo Man over Tron? Really?
The real problem with a list like this is that fifteen places are nowhere near enough to really get a good sampling. I am curious what geek movies our readers/listeners love, though. Shoot us your favorite geeky flicks at podcast@firstshowing.net and we'll read off the most mentioned films in the next 'cast or two.

The best responses will of course be singled out and read individually. Feel free to rant on! I'm thinking we'll read them for episode 27 (We just released 25 just in case you didn't know).

i don't know if these fit but i think they do
zardoz - a barbarian sean connory in barely any clothes is chosen to topple a sequestered society of immortals (has to be watched twice to understand/love)
Transformers the animated movie - no need to explain that one
dune (cerca 1984) - it was the subject of one of the first RTS games (and adds patric stewart for the nerd)
old school - true brotherhood is funner than fraternities (put van wilder in the category as well)
thats off the top of my head… (and i've seen 80% of the movies on that list)
