All in a Name: Fireflies in the Garden
February 9, 2007
by Alex Billington
There's just something about the name Fireflies in the Garden. It may be my fascination with Studio Ghibli and the beautiful animated film Grave of the Fireflies, or just the fact that the name works perfectly with a family drama. This interest comes via news about a new film starring Julia Roberts, Carrie-Anne Moss, Ryan Reynolds and Emily Watson.
Fireflies in the Garden is a semiautobiographical story that centers on the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced by an unexpected tragedy. It's being produced by Senator Entertainment and plans to begin shooting next month. The interesting thing is, this is just more mundane news except that I am only "that much more" interested in spreading the word about it purely because of the name Fireflies in the Garden.
Another wonderful point to note is that the film is being directed by Dennis Lee, someone who I am completely unfamiliar with but is a student from Columbia University who won a Student Academy Award in 2003 for a short film he wrote and directed called Jesus Henry Christ. I don't know that much about him, but he's obviously talented enough to be given this feature project that he also wrote.
Again, my interest in this film purely spawns from the title. It's all in a name, and if you at least get that right, it's a great start to a film's success.
