AMC's Best Picture Oscar Fest Next Saturday, Feb 24
February 18, 2007
by Alex Billington
The Oscars are only exactly one week away, and that means you really need to work hard to catch up on all those nominated films you haven't seen yet. Fortunately, you're in luck if you live near one of the 78 AMC theaters that are running a special Best Picture showcase on February 24th (next Saturday, just before the Oscars). The full event runs from 11AM to 11:30PM, starting with Babel then The Queen then The Departed then (the little seen) Letters from Iwo Jima and lastly Little Miss Sunshine. And all of this is only $30 and includes a free large popcorn, free large drink, unlimited refills all day, and some sort of "collectible pass." Sounds fun and you can buy your tickets early and get all the details via AMC's website. But what does FS.net think of this?
If there was ever a damn smart move on the part of the theater chains out there (which is very rare), this is one of them. Of course the problem is getting most people to sit through a nearly 3 hour long movie like Babel or Letters from Iwo Jima themselves, and as great as these movies are, I don't think that many people will be able to sit through all 5 of them. I am unfortunately not a fan of AMC's typical operation, however these sort of offerings and special features really stand out. Let's just hope it actually is an enjoyable experience once you get to the theaters. I'm sure it will be and for anyone who goes - have a great time! I may see you there if you're in Denver.
