Finally It's Confirmed: J.J. Abrams Directing Star Trek XI

After months of off and on rumors about J.J. Abrams directing Star Trek XI, confirmation has finally come from Hollywood Reporter. The buzz on this is spreading like a virus around the internet, eliciting hopes that Abrams won't ruin the franchise and that the creator of "Lost" may bring a triumphant return to the beloved series. The 11th installment will actually be a prequel to the original television series and the first movie, as it follows the first meeting of a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission. No other details or casting information has been announced, but keep watch here on FS.net as it all unveils. It's currently set to open on July 2nd, 2008.
The reports say that the deal with Abrams was officially signed just last Friday. Also part of the rumor mill for this film is that Matt Damon was supposedly going to play Captain Kirk, but that rumor has since been debunked and just about every other male actor has been rumored to be in the talks for either Kirk or Spock as well.
Update: The release date has been set as December 25th, Christmas Day, 2008.

I really don't know how to feel about Abrams as a director. I liked Mission Impossible 3, and it seemed to be shot very well and excitable. I'm still kinda iffy on the plot, however, another prequel. Prequel's aren't needed, I think the young actors that will play Spock and Kirk unfortunately will end up playing Nimoy and Shatner. Jury's still out, I think - but if there's a XII I think it's time for a "Nemesis" sequel with a new cast.

Pre-Star Trek the original series, why?
Something covering the period of: fossil fuels running out, social collapse, the Eugenic Wars, and the rise of Khan (from the Space Seed / Wrath of Khan ) - that would be interesting, because it is the near future for real, with the global economy already suffering from Energy wars (Iraq/Afghanistan), and running out of oil in the next 80 years.
It would be an interesting movie, ending with Khan escaping with his crew from Earth, on the Botany Bay space ship.
That would be pre-warp drive Earth, something we have never seen: Before the rise of Star Fleet and the Federation of Planets. Bridging the gap between now and the future of Star Trek.
In fact, the global government and the rise of Star Fleet could be sourced as a result of the wars predating the years of Khan's rule, before first contact with the Vulcans.
That would make a great TV series, echoing today's stuggle for world resources, and the real military build up in space based weapons platforms.

The guy knows how to start projects, he has not idea how to foster and end them. Look at Alias and Lost. Alias was great the firest couple seasons, then it petered out, gasped for air and died a terrible terrible death.
Lost is in the petering out stage now.
Mission Impossible was pretty cool but I don't think it was better than the second one. Nevertheless, it was just a mindless action picture.
Star Trek has 30 years of legacy. While I don't think JJ Abrams can ruin it with one movie … I'd prefer we didn't find out.
