Snyder's 'Alice in Wonderland with Machine Guns' - Sucker Punch
March 5, 2007
by Alex Billington
This week's big frontrunner, Zack Snyder, the director of 300 (which arrives on Friday finally), has put out one heck of announcement about another film he may possibly be working on. The action-fantasy film is called Sucker Punch and is the first project at Snyder's new production company Cruel and Unusual Films. Snyder will co-write it with Steve Shibuya, from his own short story, and produce with his wife Deborah Snyder. He is considering directing it, but he's also got one heck of another project on his shoulders - Watchmen. Read on for a more detailed look at the twisted story.
Sucker Punch is set in 1950's and follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.
"A while ago I had written a script for myself and there was a sequence in it that made me think, 'How can I make a film that can have action sequences in it that aren't limited by the physical realities that normal people are limited by, but still have the story make sense so it's not, and I don't mean to be mean, like a bullshit thing like Ultraviolet or something like that?' " Snyder said. "And also, I was really inspired by the worlds of movies like Moulin Rouge, which is modern but at the same time timeless."
And the reason why it has that rather interesting description is that Snyder himself has called the world "an 'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns," including dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. Zack's wife and producer Deborah Snyder concludes, "in the end, it's about this girl's survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope." Sounds pretty damn entertaining to me, and Zack knows the good from the bad (from the mention of Ultraviolet above).
