Y: The Last Man Movie Adaptation Updates

It didn't actually hit me until I looked through the Y: The Last Man comic books out here at WonderCon in San Francisco, but I wanted to make mention of the latest news about the film adaptation of the comic book. It's an interesting concept: a young amateur escape artist named Yorick suddenly discovers that he is the only male alive in the world. Everything dies, including all male species of animals and embryos, and it follows Yorick and his Capuchin monkey named Ampersand. The project has been in production "hell" for almost 2 years, but a few updates have arrived.
The first update, from SlashFilm, is in regards to a scrip that comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan has put together for the film. The script is complete and it's now out to directors, but Vaughan states that it's a slow process.
"It's not in development hell. It's in development heck," Vaughan said at the New York Comic Con. "I finished the screenplay a few months ago. Everybody at New Line seemed to like it. For Hollywood, it's either really fast or it's really slow, and it's really slow right now. I've done my job and it's out to directors now and it could be totally out of my control after this."
In addition to that update, Vaughan spoke to SlashFilm again about his own interests in directing and that he won't be directing Y: The Last Man.
"I would like to direct, but much smaller things, along the lines of something I've done in comics where it's much more personal and I would have complete control over and doesn't involve a hundred million dollar budget like Y with planes falling out of the sky and people bleeding out of every orifice."
I'm not too familiar with the series, but it sounds interesting enough and has enough support from readers like Peter at SlashFilm that it could be a worthy movie. Let's hope things start to speed up, a good director is chosen, and a damn good movie gets made in the end.
