Brief Gatchaman Update from TMNT Director Kevin Munroe

On top of discussing his hopes to direct a TMNT sequel (with Shredder), director Kevin Munroe also discussed a few new details about a project that's been listed for a long time under his name - Gatchaman. Now you're probably like me - you have no clue what this is or what it's about, but trust me, once you find out you may be a little more intrigued.

"It's five kids… they dress as bird superheroes in space, it sounds so goofy… It all derived from this 1972 Japanese anime that was imported as Battle of the Planets." Essentially it's an anime series with these five superheroes that are part of the science ninja team (you can read up on the whole series here). Kevin said he's working on a CGI adaptation that will be a little darker and probably PG-13.

"We're sort of just doing some pre-production on that right now," Kevin Munroe told FirstShowing.net at WonderCon. "It's a big sci fi thing. And as much of a step as Turtles was, hopefully Gatchaman's going to be that much more. Like it's like PG-13 CGI, and all CGI. It's going to be really… hardcore sci fi. It'll be really fun - CGI anime looking."

So far I'm very impressed with what Munroe has been able to do with another successful series and CGI, and despite I don't know much about Gatchaman, this might be pretty interesting. The full interview with Kevin will be available this week, so stay tuned on FS.net for more exclusive news.

At one point Tom Gray (the producer on the project) said, "This is one we're going PG-13 definitely. We put it on the pants on this one. This is going to be a very interesting film and even maybe pushing R."

Thanks for the tidbit splice… Either way, this is going to be a PG-13 / R CGI movie and that alone could be pretty interesting. I know people have wanted more R rated animated movies (like Scanner Darkly), and although this is based off of anime, it could be a little bit more down that realm.

I'm 35 years old! I recall seeing the TV Series when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old! It made a really good impression on me, as it did on a whole generation of kids all around the world, back then!
If they're making this PG-13 or R I can imagine it will keep all its essential density and that's great! I've no doubt it will be an umpredictable success at the boxoffice,… providing they anounce it properly (people should know it is outthere)!
