Ron Perlman Nearly The Comedian in Watchmen?
March 14, 2007
by Alex Billington
One of my all-time favorite actors, especially after truly becoming Hellboy, is Ron Perlman, who is currently getting in shape to play Hellboy again for Hellboy 2. Given all the current Watchmen buzz that's going around after the success of Zack Snyder's 300, the question came up about his involvement in an interview over at Newsarama. His response was rather interesting; he replied that with the rights for the film in the hands of Hellboy producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin, and Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro's friendship with Frank Darabont, that they were pushing for him to play the character The Comedian.
Here is the full quote from the interview:
"Well, Frank Darabont is a really close friend of Guillermo [del Toro's] and they share a boyish passion for comic books. The first time I ever met Frank was in a comic book store here on Melrose in Los Angeles. In aisle three we had a long, wonderful meeting and he told me I had to read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and everything that Alan Moore wrote. Then Watchmen came up because [Hellboy producers] Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin have the rights to make the film version of that. They were pushing for me to play the Comedian."
I'm not sure if this means he is still in consideration, but I'd be concerned that shooting schedules would overlap during the summer for both movies, and Perlman wouldn't be able to do Watchmen even if he wanted to.
I haven't actually read Watchmen, but have been becoming much more fascinated with it as I watch it develop. And just reading the few pages that I have and thinking about Perlman, this would have been the ultimate casting choice. I love Perlman and I think he could easily fit into any role, especially one like this. I'm keeping a rather keen eye on all of these Watchmen developments.

Dude, just sit down and read Watchmen! I have other people who want to read it *j/k*
In all seriousness, were this about 10-15 years ago, the Comedian would have to be played by Stacy Keach. With all due respect for Gerard Butler and what he did in 300, Perlman's body of work (including Alien Resurrection) really makes me think he would be a much better choice. The Watchmen news is definitely piquing my interest.

I agree that Perlman would be much more suited for this role than Butler. Although i haven't seen Butler play any non-serious roles, Perlman's age and wit would be much more fitting for The Comedian
And i second that Alex MUST READ WATCHMEN. If you're not reading anything else you have no excuse not to, especially since the buzz around the movie is growing so quickly.

As far as i'm concerned everything Goldman touches turns to gold. Hellboy just rocks.
