Remake of Joe Dante's Jaws Parody 'Piranha' Announced

March 16, 2007
by Alex Billington

Piranha PosterOur friends over at IESB.net posted this story about French filmmaker Alexandre Aja (director of High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes 2006 remake) being hired to remake Joe Dante's 1978 dark parody of Steven Spielberg's Jaws called Piranha. The film will be produced under Dimension Films and Bob Weinstein, who said about the remake, "we will maintain the fun and thrilling aspects of the original film but look forward to upping the ante with a modern-day twist."

The updated story will take place at Lake Havasu, Arizona, a favorite destination for partying spring breakers. When a tremor causes the ground to open up beneath the lake, chaos and terror break out as ravenous piranhas are released. Although Aja has some not-so-bad horror films under his belt, I'm unsure of how he'll do updating this. He did say that he wants to pay homage to all the "creature films that made me fall in love with the genre."

I'm not too familiar with the original film, which apparently even had a sequel made later by James Cameron, but this honestly sounds like another boring filler film. It was a parody to begin with, and a remake will only make it more modern, but either a parody or a very cheesy horror/thriller - either way I don't think it looks good. I mean, it is a horror-comedy, but what do you think, does it have a chance or will it be the next Primeval?
