Luc Besson Maybe Returning to Science Fiction One Day?

One of my favorite directors, Luc Besson, who directed one of my favorite films, The Fifth Element, has previously mentioned that he was leaving the world of directing, but has also said he would still consider coming back. I guess over the last few months he's had quite a few urges not to leave (including one of my own), as he mentioned last week at Rotten Tomatoes that he still has an idea for another science fiction movie and may yet come back a number of years down the road to direct another sci-fi. In an interview he stated when questioned about returning to sci-fi, "I think of it, not before two or three years [but] I got an idea I think."

Besson said that when he first made The Fifth Element, the technology was very new, and that today it's advanced so much from then.

"I did 'The Fifth Element' at probably the wrong moment because I was so frustrated to see that a year after that, the tools that we had to do special effects went from five to 50. For me it was a nightmare. I have to work 12 hours to do one still shot with the blue screen and the thing. I was so frustrated to see two or three years later how easy it was. So that frustrated me and I really would love to do another sci-fi where I can be much more free with the special effects."

I would love to see him come back - he's a visionary director. Although I wasn't fond of Arthur and the Invisibles, I loved Angel-A, and any chance he has to direct something that's not a children's film, I'm all for it. Come on Luc, make another sci-fi!
