Jet Li Joining The Mummy 3 and More Details - Confirmed!

March 22, 2007
by Alex Billington

IGN is reporting that a scooper caught a Q&A with director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, Stealth) who discussed more The Mummy 3, which he is apparently set to direct. Included amongst this discussion was that Jet Li would join in the film along side of Michelle Yeoh and that it would be set in China. Read on for more about The Mummy 3, which as of now isn't sounding fantastic but at least may be a step above The Mummy Returns.

Here's an excerpt from the scoop:

During the Q&A, someone asked what he thinks about Jackie Chan and Jet Li. In his answer, he confirmed that Jet Li will play the Mummy in The Mummy 3, which he is directing. He also said that the film will take place in China and Michelle Yeoh will also be in the film. The biggest bombshell was that the film's protagonist will not be Brendan Fraser, but rather his character's son, now 22 years-old. Also, Jet Li will be the head Mummy in a group of Mummies that were the Terracotta army.

I can't say I'm pleased, but it is interesting. Apparently Michelle Yeoh is not confirmed as actually being in the movie (by her management), and I'm sure Jet Li's publicists would say the same if asked. Read the full report over at IGN for more specifics.

Update! Confirmation has come today, March 22nd, from The Hollywood Reporter that Jet Li is confirmed in the film and that the story described above being set in China is all true. Good to know that an initial shaky rumor like this is confirmed as being true in the end.

Judging with what I'm hearing so far, The Mummy 3 might make the Mummy Returns look like a masterpiece in modern cinema.

Jet Li as The Mummy? You got to be kidding me.

This film is going to be horrible.

Jet Li joining The Mummy 3? No, i don't belive it.

But, if it would be confirmed, it would be very interesting.

Jet Li makes his 'final martial arts epic', and leaves the genre for….this? Ah well. Hopefully Tony Jaa will get some Hollywood backing, but stick to his roots. No, I'm sure the execs will ruin him with some crappy one liners and naff plot about corrupt cops. I wish I was 8 again, watching Terminator for the first time.

i can look past jet li being the mummy. i can even turn my head on the main setting being china. but why make a trilogy without the main character? how horrible will this movie be? c'mon, the guy directed the fast and the furious and stealth. its x-men all over again…first two movies start out good, then comes the third–change the director and totally mess up the story line people want to see. just because we expect something to happen doesnt mean we dont want it to happen. when something gets boring, dont change it…do what drummers would call it and "sweet it out". put little variations in and give it a little flair without actually changing the base story line. the mummy 3 will undoubtably bomb worse than britney spears' career.

I'm pretty sure Jet is pretty happily retired. He begrudged making several of his last films and put everything into making his last film.

I don't see how this schlock is going to get him away from his family and out of peaceful meditation.

Jet Li isn't retired. In the "Fearless" 'Extras' he said that that was his last Wushu film. Not his last movie ever.

[...] It wasn’t that long ago when I blogged about The Mummy 3 possibly being made. While browsing Digg.com, I found an article stating Jet Li would be joining the movie’s cast. I was a bit surprised by this. I don’t watch his movies, but I loved him in Lethal Weapon 4. [...]

This sounds stupid. I hope it doesn't go through. It needs to take place in EGYPT with the original cast for it to be good and follow the same line as the previous two. If they do go through with this they better name it something else so it doesn't get confused with the other mummy movies that take place in Egypt.
