Russell Crowe is going to Direct?!

Our favorite gladiator, boxer, and schizophrenic, the one and only New Zealander Russell Crowe has just announced that he is going to make his directorial debut on a film called Bra Boys. The film is a real-life drama about a counterculture movement in a surf community in Australia, and is being written by Stuart Beattie, who also just took on the writing for the Gears of War project at New Line. There's no word on whether Crowe will also star, but I think he's a bit too old to play a young surfer dude.
The film will be somewhat based on the Bra Boys documentary that focuses on Sunny, Koby and Jai Abberton, three brothers who began the underground surfer movement in the inner-Sydney seaside suburb of Maroubra. The documentary addresses the triumphs of the large, rough-and-tumble group, as well as their social struggles. The film will also pull in some nonfiction elements as well. Sound good? Yep! Let's just hope Crowe can pull it off without fighting with the entire crew.

The Bra Boys has been released here in OZ to much fanfare and surprisingly good reception, however dear old Russell only narrates the movie, and has had nothing to do with directing it. It was actually directed by Sunny Abberton, one of the actual 'bra boys'.
