Death Race 3000 Plot Details - Doesn't Sound Good

It was only last week that Paul W.S. Anderson (who directed Soldier, Resident Evil, and Alien vs Predator) was moving off of a Castlevania adaptation and focusing more on Death Race 3000, a remake of the 1975 cult classic that starred Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine. Following that a scoop came that action star Jason Statham would star in the film. And now the latest spill is some possible plot details, the kind that make you wonder why the heck Anderson is even butchering this classic into a remake.
Moviehole.net had a scooper bring them a few details, which don't sound very promising:
The plot is in the near future (2020), this time the Death Race is a globally popular televised race that has high risk prisoners driving tricked out cars armed with weapons on a racetrack that's part of a prison complex called Terminal Island, and run by the prison warden.
In addition, probably the best news, Universal is going through budget cuts to try and rid the film of its abundant "explosions and cars flipping for unnecessary reasons," a typical Anderson move that isn't needed. Let's just focus on a story, if that's possible for him. To read the rest and a more thorough look at the plot, hop on over to Moviehole.
