Lennon Talks Robot Uprising and Night at the Museum 2

In addition to the news earlier about the Reno 911!: Miami sequel called Down Under, comedy writer Thomas Lennon spoke about his other upcoming projects, including one that sounds great and another that sounds bad.

We'll start with the bad news first - a Night at the Museum sequel is being planned and Lennon is writing again. I guess it's undeniable that after making as much money as it did, a sequel would be guaranteed. Just the same as Wild Hogs, which already has a sequel underway. Lennon said:

"I don't think anyone ever thought [Night at the Museum] was going to make 560 million! It's in sort-of 'mega hit' territory now, which is nice," he says. "Right now, we're actually in very early preliminary talks [about the sequel]."

The first film was awful, one of the worst films of last year. Such a shame, but that's Hollywood for you.

Now on to the good news about a project that's been mentioned before, an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's book How To Survive a Robot Uprising. It's got Mike Myers set to star in one of his three upcoming returns to live action (as in, not Shrek).

"It's slowly heading towards going," says Lennon. "It's a slow business the movie business - years go by and all you seem to be doing is tweaking one paragraph. Nations crumble [by the time its done]."

Why is this good news, you ask? Well beyond sounding like a much more awesome story (just read that title - How To Survive a Robot Uprising - and think of Mike Myers), the writer of the book, Daniel H. Wilson, was a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute when he wrote it. I actually attended Carnegie Mellon for a few years and still have a number of friends there and a certain affinity for it, including it's mega-geeky robotics program. I chuckle every time I realize that's the inspiration behind his book, and I can only hope for a brilliant film adaptation that captures that geekiness.
