Alien Eco-Disaster Novel The Swarm Getting Adapted by Hannibal Producers

The bestselling Frank Schatzing novel The Swarm is being adapted into a big budget film, this time by Dino and Martha De Laurentiis, the producing team behind the Hannibal series of films. For those unfamiliar with the story like myself, the book is ecological disaster novel about an alien presence that exists quietly on the ocean floor and is compelled to destroy humanity after its eco-system is disrupted by pollution. They're already planning to make this as epic and wide scale as other apocalypse films like The Day After Tomorrow, which considering they mentioned that one, that may not be a great sign.
The adaptation will be written by Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his script of Silence of the Lambs and who also wrote Red Dragon. Currently the film has a first look deal at Universal, and let's hope they pick it up given I'm much more fond of them than someone like 20th Century Fox.
I think the current Hollywood big-budget trend is ecological disaster films, probably sparked by Al Gore and a general concern for eco-system. M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening is already in production and there's a few more I've heard of being worked on. I hope they turn out good in the end, and they're not another forgotten blockbuster trend like the asteroid one a few years back.

At first i thought The Swarm was going to be based on the novel by Arthur Herzog about Killer Bees.
Then after reading what the Swarm actually was about, it made me wish i was right about the Killer Bees.
Boy, the ocean sure holds lots of surprises. I'm still trying to forget The Abyss.
