Moviefone's 25 Best Movie Sequels of All Time
May 14, 2007

by Alex Billington
After the second big sequel of the summer (28 Weeks Later) opened just this past weekend, and one week before that we had Spider-Man 3, and coming up again this weekend is Shrek 3, a week before Pirates of the Caribbean 3, some people claim we're getting a bit swamped by sequels this summer. However, this is a list that will remind you that sometimes sequels can be better, and although it's rare, the ones mentioned here are the ones that make you realize we wouldn't be in the same world without them.
Be wary: the list isn't my own creation, it comes from AOL's Moviefone website. It was such a great list, I couldn't go without mentioning it!
As I was reading through this list one movie at a time, I kept saying to myself "oh, I hope they have 'this one' on here" as I kept being reminded of another actually good sequel each time I passed another one I had forgotten about. It just kept getting better and better as it went along and by the end, I was truly satisfied! Finally someone had come up with a good list and hit it dead on with just about every single one of them, give or take a few (see below it for those ones).
Here's the full list from start to finish:
25. Die Hard 2: Die Harder
24. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
23. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
22. Before Sunset
21. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (as a sequel to Empire Strikes Back)
20. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
19. After the Thin Man
18. Bourne Supremacy
17. Superman II
16. Rocky II
15. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
14. Evil Dead 2
13. Toy Story 2
12. Dawn of the Dead
11. Kill Bill Vol. 2
10. Bride of Frankenstein
9. X2: X-Men United
8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
7. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (as a sequel to Fellowship of the Ring)
6. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
5. Spider-Man 2
4. Aliens
3. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
1. The Godfather Part II
I'm only really unsure of a few, like Bourne Supremacy (I thought the first one was much better), Toy Story 2 (the first one had a more realistic, heartfelt story), Before Sunset (never even seen either of these), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (I think Goblet of Fire is the best in the series so far), but everything else they hit dead on and covered just about every last sequel that was good, since beyond these 25 there aren't any more. Another reason why I love this list, after seeing 28 Weeks Later, I'd personally throw it on there, too, as it a deserves a spot in my book.
I hope this list of the best sequels ever has perked you up and gotten you a bit more excited for the summer. Although Spider-Man 3 was a letdown, we can still be optimistic for a number of the other big sequels hitting this summer, including Pirates of the Caribbean 3 coming up very soon.

I don't think you should be able to consider Kill Bill vol. 2 as a sequel to the first. It was shot as one movie, just split up into two pieces. Just because it came out separately shouldn't mean that it is a different movie. Just my opinion at least.

There's no way Die Hard 2 should be on that list. That travesty is only compounded by the fact that Die Hard: With a Vengeance is NOT on the list.

The Empire Strikes Back is number 2 on this list????? Well, it's an AOL list so the crack-smoking stupidity is understandable.
