Frank Miller's Adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit Picked Up by Lionsgate

If we haven't mentioned or you haven't already heard before, comic book author Frank Miller is pretty big in Hollywood right now, rolling off the success of 300 and Sin City and building into a couple of projects, including Sin City 2 and Ronin, and his own film, The Spirit. Announced at last year's Comic-Con with a fresh teaser poster (seen to the right), The Spirit is Frank Miller's own adaptation that he has written and will direct of the classic Will Eisner comic book. The good news today is that Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the film for distribution, meaning it will finally get off the ground and going.
For those unfamiliar with the comic, The Spirit is a man who fakes his own death and becomes a masked vigilante so he can fight crime from the shadows of Central City, with the blessing of the city's police commissioner, an old friend. His nemesis is the Octopus, who kills those unlucky enough to see his face and is looking to wipe out the entire city, although this isn't confirmed as the villain who will be featured in the movie.
I'm sure plenty more will be revealed at this year's upcoming San Diego Comic-Con in late July, but until then, a few details were mentioned last year that we'll bring up again. The movie, unlike the black-and-white comic book, will have color, with Frank Miller probably shooting it in similar style to Sin City (as seen in the poster above), using color when needed. It will be a period piece with its fashion modeling The Untouchables and will be a serious film, not tongue-in-cheek like the comic.
I'm glad to see another great comic book project like this actually get going, and despite it seems like Hollywood is stuffed with too many comic book adaptations these days, I think this will be one of those that stands out. Stay tuned for more details on The Spirit live from Comic-Con in July!
