Fu Manchu to Return to the Big Screen Again!

The classic arch criminal mastermind Fu Manchu will be making a return to the big screen again, this time under the wing of a production company named Distant Horizon. Although it's only "on the slate" in terms of a project in development, the company is looking to bring the character back with a few of the key figures from the 1960s series of films as producers - Harry Alan Towers and actress Maria Rohm. The president of Distant Horizon spoke about the project and its direction, which will be much more of a rebirth than a remake or return. Given this news, I'm not sure if it's going to boost into a full-fledged widely recognized film that Fu Manchu probably deserves nowadays, but we can at least look forward to his return once again.
The actual character of Fu Manchu has been around for quite a while, appearing in comic books and novels originally, and is distincly recognized by his mustache (see any of the photos). Fu Manchu is a master criminal, whose murderous plots are marked by the extensive use of arcane methods. The character made his first American film debut in the 1929 movie The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, and has since had countless films made about him, including a series of them in the 1960s which Distant Horizon seems to be building off of the most. The series started in 1965 and went for 5 films, starring Christopher Lee as Manchu: The Face of Fu Manchu, The Brides of Fu Manchu, The Vengeance of Fu Manchu, The Blood of Fu Manchu, and finally The Castle of Fu Manchu.
For those of you that caught Grindhouse, Fu Manchu made a minor appearance in the fake trailer by Rob Zombie titled Werewolf Women of the SS, with Nic Cage giving a 5-second performance as Fu Manchu, pictured above.
Here's what Distant Horizon president Anant Singh said about Manchu's return.
"We will reinvent Fu Manchu as an anti-hero who fits in with a more socially conscious world and that addresses the very complex multipolar world we all live in today," Singh said. "We have already begun to discuss Fu's rebirth with a number of exciting talents in Hong Kong and mainland China."
Is this good news, will it be one hell of a film to look out for? I'm not entirely sure, but given the recent pop culture revival of Fu Manchu in Grindhouse, albeit not very widely seen given Grindhouse didn't fare too well in theaters, I think we could certainly use a good revival of the Fu.
