Fernando Meirelles to Direct Shakespeare Comedy Love's Labors Lost

The Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardener) is going to be directing a loose adaptation of the Shakespeare comedy Love's Labors Lost after he finishes his other film called Blindness. Announcing at Cannes in France, Meirelles stated "after I do Blindness' which is a very dark story, I'll really need to do a comedy," which is an intereting direction for him considering how incredibly dark and deep both City of God and Constant Gardener are. Although Love's Labors Lost is originally a Shakespeare comedy, Meirelles' adaptation will be based on the novel by Brazilian screenplay writer Jorge Furtado.
For those unfamiliar with the story in Shakespeare's Love's Labors Lost, it's one of his earliest comedies earliest where four bachelors who have dedicated themselves to chastity and scholarly pursuits soon encounter the women of their dreams. In Jorge Furtado's novel, it moves between Brazil, London, Denmark, and New York and follows the lives and romantic entanglements of a group of international students. The sad part is that we won't be seeing this for nearly three years, as Meirelles' busy schedule means he won't really begin production until late 2009, or so he hopes.
Announced in September of last year was that Meirelles would be directing a film called Blindness about a city that is suddenly struck with an epidemic of blindness. Love's Labors Lost will be what Meirelles folows that up with. If you know my own personal favorite top 10 list, you'll know City of God is #3, in its rightful place as the best dramatic film I've ever seen (excluding Return of the King). Although I wasn't that big of a fan of Constant Gardener, I've been following every movie Meirelles has made since, because I know he has something as astounding as City of God in the works and I'll be looking forward to it.
