Neil Gaiman's Adaptation of Death Finally Moving Forward

Like Frank Miller before him, famous science fiction writer Neil Gaiman may finally direct his own movie. He's already scripted and will direct an adaptation of his Death: The High Cost of Living comic mini-series, which has been talked about as a possible movie for quite a long time, at least since late 2005. Film ick has provided this recent update (in addition to IESB back in August of 2006), and confirms that Shia LaBeouf will play the male lead named Sexton Furnival in the comics. The way Hollywood works these days is that any adaptation or idea always takes a long time to come about, moving in small steps, unless it sparks something in the mind of a big Hollywood exec.
The film was being discussed at a meeting recently with Guillermo del Toro, who is going to be the executive producer on the project. Although the remainder of the cast hasn't been announced, including who will play Death aka Didi, the female lead, the project seems to be moving along and finally at a point where production may actually begin. The report claims that it would possibly start shooting in late fall or early winter in the UK.
In the comic mini-series, the main character is a teenage girl named Didi, who at first appears to be an eccentric, orphaned goth, but who insists that she is Death personified (from Wikipedia). She guides Sexton Furnival along in a journey of self discovery. You can catch the first issue in PDF form here.
Shia LaBeouf seems to be taking on just about every comic or sci fi related dream project imaginable. We already mentioned previously that he wants to be in the Y: The Last Man adaptation, and he's already in Indiana Jones IV. Either way, that's great, as I think he's a wonderful actor, and if he brings the right emphasis to these priojects, then more power to him!
