Michael Madsen Says Grindhouse Failure Means Troubles for Sin City 2?!
May 29, 2007

Right when you thought everything was going great with Sin City 2, it all gets torn apart again. It was only just 2 months ago that we found out that Sin City 2 was supposedly on schedule to start shooting in June or July. However, in an interview over at Premiere with Kill Bill and Sin City star Michael Madsen, he said the film seems to be in a bit of trouble now that Quentin Tarantino's and Robert Rodriguez's film Grindhouse did so poorly and that he hasn't even seen a script.
In the interview, Madsen responded to a question about Sin City 2:
They haven't shot it yet. I don't know if they ever will. I am not sure [about] the franchise. I think the Grindhouse thing didn't kind of work out…
Continuing on, he was asked about a script and whether one even existed yet:
No. I talk to Frank Miller quite often. He came up to my house and we drank a lot of tequila. Frank is pretty funny. I haven't seen the script for Sin City 2. I don't know if they are gonna make it. I hope they do. And if and when they do, I will be in it.
For the rest of the interview, including a bit about Mickey Rourke, read it at Premiere.
It's a bit ridiculous that The Weinstein Company would make such an idiotic decision regarding the failure if Grindhouse and future of the Sin City series. In my mind, Grindhouse wasn't a failure, it was brilliant, it only didn't perform great at the box office. However, the system of Hollywood is supposed to be designed to handle box office "failures" like this, for films that are actually incredible, just not mainstream (another example is The Fountain) and use their tentpole moneymakers to recoup the losses. I am fairly sure Sin City 2 will perform wonderfully, no matter what happened to Grindhouse or who went and saw it, so why connect the two? I hope this is just a speed bump that gets smoothed out soon.

One would think with all the success of Frank Miller's material as of late, Sin City 2 would be an easy sell…
