Wes Craven's Last House on the Left Remake Gets a Director

Announced late last year, another one of Wes Craven's classic films is going to be remade, this time it's The Last House on the Left. The film from 1972, which falls into the same exploitation areas as Grindhouse, is about a number of rapists and murderers who seek refuge in the home of one of their victims. Craven himself is producing and it was just announced that Adam Alleca is rewriting the new script and Dennis Iliadis (Hardcore) will be directing.
Craven said the remake will retain the spirit of the original but aim for a more realistic tone. They're hoping to begin production early next year, with Craven's other films Shocker or People Under the Stairs likely being remade first. Knowing Hollywood's style these days, this will probably turn out to be nothing but pure crap, but it's just not proper to make that claim this early. There are only a few solid remakes that really turn out great, and looking at the recent Hills Have Eyes II, it's unfortunately not Craven's films that fall into that classification.

For anyone who doesn't know, Last House on the Left is actually a remake of an Ingmar Bergman film called The Virgin Spring and it starred the great Swedish actor Max von Sydow. It's worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

Thank you so much for mentioning this! "The Virgin Spring" is an EXCELLENT movie and Von Sydow's performance is as raw and powerful as the film itself. Man, why are they remaking this?! The story hook is good (as it was in "Virgin Spring") but this just isn't nescessary. I hope Craven isn't calling it quits on directing. I'm still hoping he'll do a film based on "Fountain Society", his wonderfully entertaining novel. The only thing worse than remaking "Last House on the Left" (not a great film, by the way) is reading that "People Under the Stairs" is also up for a re-hash. Aaaargh! I LOVE that movie! It's one of Craven's best and has biting satire on top of genuine suspense, shocks and excitement. I'd be happier if he were just doing "Scream 4"!

I think Craven's "People Under the Stairs" is by far his best film… and remaking that film would be sacrilege.

Wow, I would like to thank you as well for that info, Charlie. I am an Ingmar Bergman fan and recently scoured IMDB for movies of his that I had yet to see. I guess I overlooked that one. I will have to watch it.
