Hitchcock's The Lodger Getting a Remake

Although it's by far not official, Disturbia from earlier this year was quite similar to a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. However, as is inevitable, more and more Hitchcock films are being remade today, with the latest being his first film ever, The Lodger. The film will be re-imagined as an urban thriller set in Los Angeles and will be directed by first time director David Ondaatje for Sony.
Originally released in 1927 when Hitchcock was only 28 years old, the film is adapted from Marie Belloc Lowndes' novel of the same name which is based on the true story of the hysteria caused by the Jack the Ripper's killing spree that took place over several weeks in 1888. Ondaatje's adaptation is broken into two converging plot lines set in present-day Los Angeles. The first involves an uneasy relationship between a psychologically unstable landlady and her enigmatic lodger, and the second is about a troubled detective engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with an unknown killer.
It's unknown whether this could possibly go straight-to-DVD or actually release theatrically, but I would hope for the latter, only because on paper it sounds like it could be as big of a hit as Disturbia.

While I am getting very sick of countless remakes, especially remaking films by great directors, this one sounds interesting. And it might be alright considering it was Hitch's first film and a lot of people might not have seen it.
