Tobin Bell Joins Bousman's Repo! The Genetic Opera

We've mentioned it briefly before and followers of Saw II, III, and IV director Darren Lynn Bousman know it well - Repo! The Genetic Opera. It's a horror rock opera, being referred to as Brazil-meets-Rocky Horror Picture Show, from the Saw director and is apparently a musical that is even more violet than the Saw films. Although some could say this was inevitable, the latest news is that Tobin Bell (who plays Jigsaw in the Saw movies) has been cast in Repo! The Genetic Opera.
If you're curious what this film is really about, Bousman explains. "The premise is organ repossession in the future. The idea is that everybody is buying up organs, and they cannot afford to pay for these organs. Thus, legalized organ repo-men come into the picture. Murder becomes sanctioned by law. So, if you buy a heart and can't afford it, someone can burst through the door and take your heart out… and they don’t get in trouble for it. The very first scene sees [some repo men] singing while they are ripping the spinal cord out of someone."
Although his specific role in the film hasn't been identified, Bell will definitely dance and sing, and is excited to do so.
"Yes, I can sing," the creepy Bell added, saying he’s looking forward to the flick. "I'm a guitar player and a singer…I did hear some of the music, and it's great. I think this movie is going to be remarkable."
Director Darren Lynn Bousman, who just wrapped filming Saw IV with Tobin Bell and is starting the post-production on that, will start work on Repo! The Genetic Opera following the completion of Saw IV. Bousman added a bit more to the concept and idea of the film.
Adding that "there is no dialogue," Bousman revealed that "This thing has seventy-seven songs. From the second it starts, it’s all singing. And the music is not campy. It is very Nine Inch Nails, very Tool-esque."
Excited yet? You should be! And for those of you who are still fans of the horror and gore genre, even Tobin says it's bloodier than the Saw films, and he's been in every last one of those!
"There is definitely camp to it, but it is much more serious than the 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. It is more violent than 'Saw' too; in fact, it makes all of the 'Saw' movies look like Disney films."
For more on the project including plenty more discussion with Bousman and Bell, head over to MTV. There isn't a release date set right now, but we can expect it probably early next year, as production is starting pretty soon meaning it should likely be ready by year's end. Stay tuned for plenty of updates on Repo! The Genetic Opera as well as Saw IV!
