Cameron Diaz Joins Richard Kelly's The Box

Donnie Darko writer and director Richard Kelly is currently finishing work on his second feature film titled Southland Tales, but already has his third lined up as well. Titled The Box, the film is a PG-13 horror film with a script written by Kelly himself based on a Richard Matheson short story. In an odd turn, the 34-year-old actress Cameron Diaz has been set to star as the lead in the film.
The film is based on Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button" with the following plot synopsis from IMDb: A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a troubled married couple, who open it and become instantly wealthy. Little do they realize that opening the box also kills someone they do not know. In Variety, it states that Diaz will be cast as a young woman who is given a mysterious box by a stranger. She's told that certain things will happen depending on which buttons she presses.
I'm quite intrigued. We all know what Kelly can do with a science fiction story in Donnie Darko and the upcoming Southland Tales (that no one has seen yet), but I'm very interested to see what he does with this horror / thriller story. Production will begin in the fall.
What does everyone think about casting Cameron Diaz? Personally, I don't like it, there are hundreds of better actresses they could've chosen.

I happen to disagree, Richard Kelly is know for odd ball casting choices… In fact, he is quoted saying "It's like my calling card, casting actors/actress in part's people have never seen them in before." Case in point-Southland Tales-Dwayne Johnson, Sarah M Geller, and Seann W. Scott as your leads in a epic Sci-Fi/Thriller. Or how about Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze as supporting actors in Donnie Darko.
Cameron Diaz in a high-concept, supernatural, PG-13 thriller?!? Sounds just right for Richard Kelly.
I'm a big fan of Richard Matheson's work. I'm quite fond of this particular short story 'button, button'. And I would highy recommend it to everyone.
