Big Announcements for Richard Kelly's Southland Tales Coming Soon!
July 9, 2007

Those of you who are regular readers here at FS.net know that we've been following Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko) next film, Southland Tales, quite closely. Another brief update has hit his MySpace Blog, but this time it's some good news stating that we may finally see some big announcements regarding a release date and a trailer quite soon!
Back in April, Kelly stated that they had gotten the funding and green light from Sony to get a second round of visual effects. Three months later and they're still only halfway through, but they're going to have everything finalized by the end of the summer.
As for Southland Tales… we are about halfway through completing all of the new visual effects. We have to deliver everything by the end of summer. I have to tell everyone that the amount of visual effects work being added to the film is SIGNIFICANT… and I am so grateful for the work being done by Thomas Tannenberger and his team at Gradient VFX in Venice Beach.
And I can confirm that a company has been hired by Sony to begin work on a trailer. The release date will be announced very soon.
Does this mean we'll be seeing Southland Tales by the end of the year or instead in early 2008? I hope Sony chooses to put it out in November, somewhat like Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, and doesn't dump it in the "dumping grounds" in early '08. It's Richard Kelly and he deserves better, especially with the continuous buzz building around Southland Tales.
Hopefully there will be an update and more details from the San Diego Comic-Con, if not the trailer, so check back again in late July!
Kelly also briefly recalled The Box casting announcement, and says that more casting announcements will be coming soon.
We are gearing up to start production on The Box in November… shooting in Richmond, VA… starring the one and only Ms. Cameron Diaz. I couldn't be more excited… and expect more casting announcements soon.
Kelly's got an exciting plate of films on the way, and I know I'm personally anxious to see Southland Tales and hear more about The Box! Stay tuned here at FS.net for more extensive coverage on both Southland Tales and The Box!

Alex,
You may just get your wish… Some exciting news was reported on 'Richard-Kelly.net' over the weekend:
"It now appears to be a virtual certainty that Southland Tales will come out in November."
So this Nov. 2007 release seems very possible, and that March 2008 date seems to be out.(at least for the moment.)

Unlike 'The Fountain', Southland Tales will be in a limited format upon releasing, with a chance to expand if the box office numbers permit.
Of course if a trailer is released and a huge up roar for the film takes place, then it might change to a WIDE release… I guess only time will tell.

Can't wait for this. I've been reading the prequel books.
Really interesting stuff so far.
