Alex Proyas Directing Dracula Year Zero

There isn't enough justification yet to say vampires are a returning trend, but there are quite a few films coming soon (the rest of them are listed below). The latest to add to that list is one titled Dracula Year Zero that's to be directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot). The film will tell the origin story of Vlad the Impaler, a Romanian prince who inspired Bram Stoker's vampire tale.
Apparently there is quite a bit of enthusiasm around the script, written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, which had the goal of showing off Vlad when he was still vital and to explore the fact that he's considered a hero in Romania for fending off the Turks. Proyas complimented the "fresh take on the legend" and said the project manages to play off the horror and the sympathy you have for a character that "sells his soul to the Devil to save his kingdom and family." Instead of showing the character Vlad when "he's past his prime and 100 years old," they're telling his story when "he's at the height of his powers."
The other vampire projects in the works in Hollywood at the moment are: a Dracula sequel titled The Un-Dead; a Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawke movie called Daybreakers; another Vlad movie called The Historian; Sylvain White's Castlevania adaptation; and two films coming up for release this year which include 30 Days of Night and I Am Legend. With this vampire movie that makes around 7 in total.
