Robert De Niro Producing Chasing the Dragon Epic

Universal and partners Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are working on an epic-sized drama about the rise of Mao Zedong and communism in China. The film will be based off of the memoir "Chasing the Dragon: A Veteran Journalist's Firsthand Account of the 1949 Chinese Revolution" by Roy Rowan, who was one of the only Western journalists in China as the events were unfolding. This is no small indie film like The Painted Veil, this will be a full on drama with a love story that's be adapted by Jon Marans and Yuri Sivo.
Roy Rowan landed in China and initially worked for the United Nations Relief and then as a correspondent for the Shanghai bureau of Time and Life. Teamed with photographer Jack Birns, Rowan covered China's civil war and observed close up the rise of Mao and his army. Along the way, Rowan fell for a Chinese interpreter who may have been a spy.
