Comic book legend Frank Miller's upcoming adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit has been gaining quite a bit of buzz in the news recently, with Samuel Jackson being cast as the villain. After keeping the film's cast in the dark, Miller has finally revealed that Gabriel Macht will play the lead character Denny Colt aka The Spirit.
Macht will play the title character, a man who has faked his own death so he can battle crime from the shadows of Central City. He runs up against the Octopus, played by Sam Jackson, a villain who's bent on wiping out the entire city and kills anyone unlucky enough to see his face.
It seems that both Miller and Lionsgate, the production studio on the film, are very confident in their casting choice, stating that they expect to have more than just one Spirit movie.
"We think Gabriel has a devilishly charming quality, and the dry wit that embodies the Spirit, and we wanted to do this with someone who can embody this character for the next few years, because we anticipate we'll be making more than one Spirit movie," said Lionsgate president of film production Mike Paseornek.
The report also states that they'll begin production in October with a planned release in 2009. Wow, what a jump! I thought we'd be seeing this in 2008, but I guess Miller is going to wait and possibly debut a lot at next year's Comic-Con to aim for an even bigger opening in 2009.
