Just when you thought horror movie stories couldn't get any worse, Sony / Screen Gems decides to pick up and remake another one about a rabies outbreak in Los Angeles. The original film, titled [Rec], is a Spanish-language horror film directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza that doesn't even come out in Spain until October 23rd of this year. The US remake is slated to begin production early next year with brothers John Erick and Drew Dowdle writing and directing.

In the film, a downtown Los Angeles apartment building is quarantined after a mysterious, deadly and highly contagious strain of rabies breaks out. A reporter and her cameraman are among those trapped inside. Sounds a bit like a Blair Witch-like film but with a rabies outbreak instead.

The two writer/director brother's first film was The Poughkeepsie Tapes, another horror film that debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and isn't set to open in theaters until next February.
