Voltron Movie Moving Forward at Fox

It's confirmed: J.J. Abrams Cloverfield / 1-18-08 project is NOT Voltron! It was announced today that 20th Century Fox-based production company New Regency has partnered with the Mark Gordon Company to adapt Voltron: Defender of the Universe into a possible franchise. Currently writer Justin Marks, who is also writing the He-Man movie, is penning the first script.
Along with plenty of other major toy and cartoon series from the 1980's, interest in Voltron picked up after Transformers was so successful. Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale of survival set in New York City and Mexico, but nothing more of the story is known.
In the animated series, five Galaxy Alliance pilots control vehicles shaped like lions that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron robot in order to battle an evil menace. It just doesn't have the same "ring" as Transformers to me, but enough people are talking about it, so maybe it will be big. Only time will tell. At least we can officially dispel all those rumors that the 1-18-08 movie was Voltron.
