Indie Spotlight: Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire

In an attempt to shed some light on some independent films and expand our horizons from the typical mainstream blockbusters and comic book movies, I'm going to occasionally feature an indie movie that's in the news. Today it's filmmaker Danny Boyle's (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) next project - Slumdog Millionaire. You would imagine that by now Danny Boyle is no longer indie, but that's not the case, especially when you hear what this film is about.

The based-on-a-true-story film follows an illiterate street kid from Mumbai, India who wins the jackpot on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" Boyle is shooting it in Mumbai starting in November. He says he wants to use the extremity of Mumbai culture to give personality to the love story that develops with the street kid, who is leveraging his television performance in the hopes that he will find the girl that he loves, who watches the show every night.

Brit newcomer Dev Patel has been cast in the lead role and the script is written by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty).

This may sound a little unconventional or uninteresting, but it honestly sounds like it has a great story at heart. I'm always confident that Danny Boyle will take any script and any story and turn it into something amazing. He's one of the greatest indie directors around who always brings something very unique to a film, and with Slumdog Millionaire I don't expect anything less.

What makes Danny Boyle a truly great director is that he successfully makes a great film thats wildly different than the last one.

Nice review, but just wanted to mention that the film is not based on a true story but on a novel by Vikas Swarup called Q&A.
