Wolfgang Petersen Directing Whitley Strieber's The Grays

Wolfgang Petersen has a long list of directing credits: Das Boot, Outbreak, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm, and Troy. He's not the greatest director around, in fact one could compare him to Michael Bay as being a blockbuster director who makes tentpole films and nothing of content. However, some of his better movies are most definitely enjoyable popcorn flicks, which are a necessity in Hollywood. Petersen's next project has been revealed - he's directing The Grays based on Whitley Strieber's sci-fi novel.
The news comes from Whitley Streiber's website. The novel is described below (courtesy of the publisher) and it sounds like a creepy and odd alien-like story set here on earth.
A triumvirate of Grays, known as the Three Thieves, has occupied a small Kentucky town for decades–abducting its residents and manipulating fates and bloodlines in hopes of creating an ultra-intelligent human being. Nine-year-old Conner Callahan will face the ultimate terror as he struggles to understand who he has been bred to be and what he must do to save humanity.
Though the Grays have slowly begun to make themselves known, Colonel Michael Wilkes, the head of a select group of government and military officials that have been monitoring the aliens, will do anything in his power to keep them a secret. Wilkes will set in motion a sinister plan to ensure the survival of humanity, but at what cost?
The fate of the human race lies with one woman, Lauren Glass. Her uncanny ability to communicate with the aliens and her relationship with the last remaining captive gray may be the only way to save humankind.
Filming will begin soon with a likely release aiming for summer next year or 2009. Sounds interesting, but as I commented before, Wolfgang Petersen isn't the best director around and it sounds like this won't be anything too extraordinary.
